Sunflower 'Golden Eye' has small, yellow flowers with a dark center. It is a good choice for cut flowers as the blooms remain fresh in a vase for several days.
To encourage repeat flowering, pick the blooms regularly.
Bees and butterflies also love the flowers, making them ideal for any garden.
The plants remain quite small, reaching only 60 cm, which means they can also be grown in pots.
Climatic conditions:
Sunflowers are sun-loving plants that require plenty of sunlight and high temperatures to grow properly. They thrive in temperate climates.
Sowing:
We recommend sowing sunflowers in pots to accelerate their development at the beginning of the growing season and to protect them from slugs. In April, sow 1-2 seeds per pot with a minimum diameter of 8 cm and water regularly until germination.
Planting:
Approximately one month after sowing, sunflowers are ready to be planted outdoors. Use a trowel to dig a hole of the same depth as the pot. Remove the sunflower from the pot and place it in the hole. Backfill with soil, pat it down firmly, and water generously. Sunflowers cannot tolerate frost, so check the weather before planting them.
Care:
Sunflowers need to be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. We recommend fertilizing with a solid fertilizer a few days after planting to promote good growth. Sunflowers are resistant to pests and diseases, but they are susceptible to rust and powdery mildew. If you want to harvest the seeds, you must protect them from birds with a net.
Uses:
Sunflowers are ideal for decorating the garden, but can also be used to produce oil or seeds. Sunflower blossoms are edible and can be used in salads or desserts.
Sunflower seeds are a good source of protein, fiber, and vitamins. You can also leave the sunflowers standing at the end of the season to provide food for birds.
